Penumbra: A Festival of Shadow and Color
The Abbey Theatre
2005
Running Time 48:00
Sample 3:30
This original multimedia performance is a mythology of creation and balance. Two worlds, the Land of Bwight and the Land of Color, are thrown into chaos when two rebellious fairies leave behind the set ways of their cultures. Shadite flees war struck Bwight and at the same moment Lighdow leaves the ritual customs of the Land of Color. Their struggle to find something new destroys everything they know. As the only two survivors they are able to find one another and from this unity a world of balance is brought into the light.
This is the first work of Penumbra Theatre Company. Penumbra mixes video, soundscapes, and sets with lights, actors, and costumes. Through the mystical adventures of our two main characters we were able to blend the reality of traditional theatre with the fantasy of technology.
As the producer and a founder of Penumbra, I was deeply involved from conception to strike with this production. My vision was realized most clearly in the Sand Queen scene, where traditions of the Catholic mass were present.
